The International Conference on Hydrogen Safety (ICHS)

ICHS is a biennial event organised by HySafe that serves as a leading platform for the exchange of knowledge on hydrogen safety. Since 2005, the ICHS has brought together experts from academia, industry, and government to present research, discuss advancements, and address challenges in hydrogen safety. The conference is instrumental in driving the development of safety standards and regulations, promoting the safe adoption of hydrogen technologies globally.
The ICHS is co-organised with the International Energy Agency (IEA) Hydrogen Implementing Agreement (HIA) via Safety Task 37. It is endorsed by major stakeholders such as the European Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCH JU) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DoE). The International Partnership for Hydrogen and Fuel Cells in the Economy (IPHE) also regularly contributes by hosting workshops on regulatory aspects.
The conference has been hosted in key international locations, including Pisa, Italy (2005), San Sebastian, Spain (2007), Ajaccio, Corsica, France (2009), San Francisco, USA (2011), Brussels, Belgium (2013), Yokohama, Japan (2015), Hamburg, Germany (2017), Adelaide, Australia (2019) and Québec City, Canada (2023). Each event has played a significant role in promoting international collaboration and advancing best practices in hydrogen safety.
The value of the ICHS lies in its role as a forum for establishing and refining hydrogen safety practices, regulations, and standards. It provides stakeholders across the hydrogen value chain an opportunity to collaboratively address safety issues, thereby facilitating the broader adoption of hydrogen as a clean energy source.
Research Priorities Workshop (RPW)
HySafe organises the Research Priorities Workshop (RPW) to identify key challenges in hydrogen safety research and set priorities to address knowledge gaps in the short to medium term. The RPW brings together researchers, industry representatives, and policymakers to align efforts in advancing hydrogen safety.
The RPW originated from the Phenomena Identification and Ranking Table (PIRT) exercise initiated in 2004 by the Network of Excellence (NoE) HySafe, which preceded the current International Association for Hydrogen Safety. These workshops aim to reduce fragmentation in hydrogen safety research by promoting international collaboration.
Since 2010, the RPW has expanded its focus to cover broader hydrogen safety topics. Workshops were held in Berlin (2012), Washington, DC (2014), Petten, Netherlands (2016), Buxton, UK (2018), Quebec City, Canada (2022), and Minneapolis, USA (2024), supported by various international organisations.
The RPW brings together international experts to coordinate research efforts and define strategic priorities in hydrogen safety. The findings are shared to guide research directions and policy development, addressing both current and future challenges.
