At the AGM this week in Quebec City, the General Assembly elected Nick Smith as President of HySafe.
Nick brings extensive governance and commercial experience, along with his hydrogen expertise, to the role and has been Vice President for the last 3 years succeeding Stuart Hawksworth as President.
In addition the General Assembly voted to elect the following members to the executive board for the first time:
Vice President: Rita Liang
Industry Chair: Lee Phillips
While our current Communications Chair, Kate Jeffery was re-elected in that role and Thomas Jordan was elected to the role of Treasurer.
We would like to congratulate Nick, Rita, Lee, Kate and Thomas on their election and look forward to working with them in the future.
The General Assembly also voted to give Honorary Membership of the association to Stuart Hawksworth in recognition of his long service and leadership over the last 4 years as President and prior to that in a variety of roles.
Congratulations Stuart and thank you for your leadership and effort particularly over the last 2 challenging years of Covid interruptions.
Korea Gas Safety’s HoYun Joe provided a presentation on their ICHS2025 bid which was widely supported and we look forward to working with KGS on future planning and development.

We are delighted to have held our first IAHySafe’s in-person event since COVID – the Research Priorities Workshop. Presentations and detailed discussions from 24 of the leading world hydrogen safety experts. We have defined and ranked the most immediate research priorities needed to safely advance the deployment of hydrogen technologies. Our report summary will be published shortly.
Engineering Design, Risk Assessment, and Codes and Standard 1st Edition – 2022
IAHySafe is delighted to release the Hydrogen Safety for Energy Applications Handbook.
Hydrogen Safety for Energy Applications – 1st Edition (elsevier.com)
Published by Elsevier earlier this year this book provides: Engineering Design, Risk Assessment, and Codes and Standards different aspects of contemporary knowledge regarding the hazards, risks and safety connected with hydrogen systems. Sections cover the main hydrogen technologies and explore the scientific aspects of possible sources and consequences of accidental events that can occur when hydrogen is used, including in its vehicular applications. Risk assessment, as well as the safety measures/safety barriers applicable in such situations are also considered. Finally, a short survey concerning legal aspects is presented.

Dr Stuart Hawksworth delivered a plenary presentation on the safety of hydrogen in the energy system at the recent world hydrogen energy conference (WHEC) 2022 held in Istanbul. A fantastic opportunity to instill the crucial messages of managing hydrogen safety to international industry groups.
The Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM) is commissioned by the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) to set up a test platform for the safe operation of hydrogen and hydrogen-natural gas pipelines. The facility will provide the opportunity to answer safety-related questions quickly and in a practical manner in order to accelerate the market ramp-up.
The focus is on investigations that have to be carried out on a real scale and also under critical operating conditions. In our planning, it is important to us to consider the questions, needs and priorities from industry and research. For this we need your support. Under the following link you will find a survey on important issues and questions in context with the operation of pipelines with hydrogen on which we would like to have your assessment.
The survey is open until July 31. The time required is about 10 minutes. We look forward to a lively participation and thank you for your assistance! Please feel free to forward this questionnaire to interested third parties and distribute it in your networks.
If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact ModuH2Pipe@bam.de.
Dissemination conference for the project HyTunnel-CS ( “Pre-normative research for safety of hydrogen driven vehicles and transport through tunnels and similar confined spaces”) will take place 14-15 July 2022, the Hotel, 38 Boulevard de Waterloo, 1000 Bruxelles, Belgium.
PLEASE REGISTER FOR THE CONFERENCE HERE (free of charge)
DETAILED AGENDA IS AVAILABLE HERE
The project aimed at performing pre-normative research for safety of hydrogen driven vehicles and transport through tunnels and similar confined spaces.
The project partners will present the project research outcomes including:
IAHySafe member DNV will lead a study that will produce a roadmap for European distribution networks to show how they can unlock the growth potential of hydrogen utilization. DNV will analyze how European gas distributors can contribute to the hydrogen development before developing a roadmap to show how gas distribution companies can support the transformation of Europe’s primary hydrogen distribution infrastructure.
The Ready4H2 initiative was recently launched to support the development of a hydrogen market in Europe. The project currently consists of some 80 organizations from about 15 countries working together to support a strong hydrogen market and create a common understanding of the future needs of gas distributors and how this can transform towards the climate neutrality of the European energy infrastructure.

With the momentum around the emerging hydrogen economy worldwide there was more material and interest that ever before in the ninth international conference for hydrogen safety. Held from 21-24 September 2021 “Safe Hydrogen for Net Zero” had 426 registrations and delivered over 200 presentations in total with key note presentations and topicals each day supplementing 139 peer reviewed presentations.
